Now, the Beth Ami Book Group is reading contemporary Israeli author Etgar Keret’s short stories called SUDDENLY, A KNOCK ON THE DOOR (2012, 188 pgs.) Like his memoir (THE SEVEN GOOD YEARS., which we read last month.), most of his stories are concise vignettes, using colloquial language, and focusing on everyday life. Sometimes funny, absurd, Kafka-esque, full of dark humor, energy and insight — often deeply and quietly moving. Keret’s style is a sharp contrast to realist authors. Highly original. His admirers include writers Amos Oz and Salman Rushdie.
